I am loving the hottest interior design trend for 2015 which I categorize as modern vintage. The chair featured above features style and comfort and best of all design flexibility. Is it vintage or is it modern? You decide…

Loving the crazy cool watercolor inspired fabric? This textile is just another great way to flex your artistic nature in interior design today. If this fabric doesn’t work for your interior, consider one of their 1200 other selections, all on sale during the Anniversary Sale.

Doing good things for our community… It’s almost time for the Dream Big Gala Event!

Posted on Feb 25, 2015 in Blog

I just learned about this fabulous charity fundraiser from one of my clients. Founded in 2004, Special Spaces is a non-profit organization that creates dream bedrooms for children with life threatening illnesses. It evolved on the belief that children facing this journey need a special place to heal, recover and find peace. The focus is simple; bring hope and inspiration to the children and families they serve.

With 30 rooms completed and a goal of 100 more over the next five years, Special Spaces has one major fundraiser, the Dream Big Gala. This fundraiser benefits Special Spaces by raising money for room makeovers in Wisconsin.  For the silent auction this year, McNabb & Risley donated the items featured below. Bid on a gold pierced metal bowl, the equestrian giclee featuring some fanciful horses, a metal owl bulletin board and an art glass bowl with a $500 gift certificate! The Dream Big Gala will be held on February 27th, 2015 at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, WI.  For more information, visit http://specialspaceswisconsin.org/ or call director Kathy Schmidt at 414-801-6320.

This dining room set is seriously stunning; wouldn’t you agree? Imagine having friends over and sitting down to share a home cooked meal…or in my case, takeout. My Aunt Dorothy always said, “It’s not about the food, dear, it’s about good friends and great conversation.” The dining room featured above offers a slightly modern edge to a traditional style, so perfect for today’s trend. Special order it now during the Anniversary Sale.

Looking for a fabulous recipe to serve? Try my Bestie’s signature stir fry dish!

8 tsp. minced garlic
4 tbsp. fresh lime
8 tsp. gluten free soy sauce
4 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. crushed red pepper
4 tbsp. brown sugar
1-12 oz. sirloin steak, thinly sliced
1 lb. fresh green beans, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 red bell pepper, cut into ¼” strips
1 yellow bell pepper, cut into ¼” strips
2 tsp. corn starch
3 cups hot cooked rice

1. Mix first five ingredients, including 3 tbsp. oil and transfer steak into the mixing bowl. Let it stand at room temperature for 20 minutes.

2. Transfer your steak into a hot frying pan at medium high heat and stir fry with 1 tbsp of oil until browned. Remove steak and add fresh beans and peppers and stir fry for a couple of minutes.

3. Wisk corn starch into the marinade and pour over veggies until the sauce thickens. Add your steak to the vegetable mixture, allow to cook another minute or so until warmed. Serve over hot rice.

This super easy recipe is a hit at our home and serves four; enjoy!

Thinking about redesigning your space?

Here are a few helpful tips from the McNabb & Risley design staff to get you started:

Gabriella: Find something that inspires your design, like a beautiful piece of art or a family heirloom.

Sara: Do some soul searching and edit your space; now’s the time to decide what pieces you’re going to keep and incorporate into your new interior.

Linda: Find an interior designer at McNabb & Risley that you feel comfortable working with because it’s important to develop a relationship with someone who understands your design vision and budget.

Kristen: Consider the function of the space; who is going to be using it and what for (i.e. reading, relaxing, entertaining)? How much seating is needed? What is the focal point of the space (i.e. TV, windows, fireplace)?

Amanda: You can start brainstorming for your space by looking through design magazines, or better yet, visit McNabb & Risley or our online design blog!

Design terminology 101: What is a Greek key pattern? Here are a few gorgeous examples below…

Greek key patterns are classically designed decorative borders constructed from a continuous line and shaped into a repeated geometric motif. Greek key designs can be traced back to ancient Greece and the pattern is thought to symbolize infinity and unity. Greek key patterns have been found on decorative vases, pottery and used as architectural details on ancient temples. Today there is a resurgence of this popular design motif and I am spotting it be utilized on area rugs, designer textiles, decorative tapes and even etched into crystal hurricanes.

Our Valentine’s Day DIY Project…

Looking for a creative way to display your children’s homemade valentines? Try my fun craft project using simple wood clothes pins and twine. Select three paint colors; I chose white, hot pink and cherry red. Paint one side of the clothespin in a solid color and let dry.

clothes

Next, accent the clothespins with small painted stripes and polka dots. You can also leave a few clothespins in plain colors and gloss over them in silver sparkly nail polish or glitter paint.

Let dry overnight. This is a fun project for the entire family to try. When complete, string twine across a long hallway or door opening and clip on your favorite treasured valentines. Your children will love admiring their art and you will enjoy it too!

For a more grown up version of this craft project, try this approach…For a more sophisticated look, use metallic paints in gold and silver and add a natural off-white cotton twine. The gold and silver would offer a more versatile option for displaying your favorite photographs and greeting cards year-round. I hope you enjoy creating something wonderful with your family and if you do, please send us a photograph of your finished project – we’d love to see it!

We have been getting a lot of concerned calls this morning about our boarded up window; thank you for your concern. The Open House got a little out of hand at the end of the day when someone drove through the front window. It was an accident – no problems, we are all good here and so is the driver. See what you miss when you don’t turn out for these events?! You have to laugh…
