Antique chair restoration McNabb & Risley style!

Posted on Aug 28, 2015 in Blog

You may remember my post in April featuring my Minneapolis design project and here is a sneak peak at phase one now completed.

My client’s husband inherited a pair of Victorian chairs from his family and wanted to incorporate them into their new design scheme. While the neutral texture was lovely and highlighted the frame, my client desired something more high style. The antique chairs flank the fireplace and become a focal point in a rather large space.

To draw the eye forward I found this fabulous ivory and indigo blue woven fabric. The dramatic upscale damask pattern is a design nod to the past yet thoroughly modern and chic for today!

I adore distinctive lighting and this lamp is a perfect example of style and function.

Posted on Aug 24, 2015 in Blog

Good lighting can make or break any interior and I love unusual table lamps. Our lamp features a dark plum ceramic base with a charcoal glaze. The base is brushed nickle and the rectangle shades are a champagne bronze color. Due to the nature of the firing process all bases will be unique and color may vary. I believe these lamps would be the perfect addition to any setting that requires restrained elegance.

Discover five easy ways to add a little Bohemian flair to your home without breaking the bank!

Posted on Aug 20, 2015 in Blog

1) Incorporate material elements such as handwoven baskets, living plants (definition below), ceramics and clusters of candles throughout your space. Display books in stacks on the floor, add informal floor pillows and chunky throws to complete the look.

2) Add layer upon layer of natural fiber area rugs featuring tribal patterns. Have fun mixing it up and experiment with the placement until you get the look you love!

3) Create a stylized art gallery featuring found art and vintage paintings. Be sure to mix in some newly purchased art to create that eclectic mix you are striving for.

4) Add a colorful mix of accent pillows in non-matched patterns and colorways. All our toss pillows are down-filled for extra lounging comfort so keep that in mind when you are making pillow selections. Pillows should not only look good but must be comfortable too!

5) Cultivate your creative side by decorating with a collection of home furnishings gathered from past eras. Explore adding unexpected elements of design, mixing mismatched furniture and styles. Most of all, promise me that you will have fun and enjoy the process of creating a truly unique space that you are proud to call home!

Design Debates—Should I go with a coffee table or an over-scale upholstered cocktail ottoman?

Posted on Aug 17, 2015 in Blog

I was having a lot of that design dilemma last weekend throughout the store and I think it’s wonderful that you have two options! One of the latest trends in home fashions is to use a large over-scale ottoman instead of a cocktail table, but before you go purchase ask yourself these simple questions…

1) Do I like to put my feet up every night?
If you do the cocktail ottoman is the perfect choice because it’s super comfortable and supportive for your legs and feet. An added bonus is that an ottoman can be used as extra seating when you have large gatherings, and adds a “pop” of color to any interior!

2) Do I like to eat and drink in this space? If you do eat and drink in the room a cocktail table would be a better choice because you need a solid surface for your drinks and snacks. You can always place a tray on an ottoman, but if you have a spill it can be disastrous. Also a cocktail table is easy to personalize with your favorite books, art objects, and fresh flowers.

zfl-5001_purple_ottoman_surya
The ottoman/bench featured above is unique because of the distressed area rug upholstery on the top. It’s colorful, hard-wearing, and has a beautiful Boho vibe. The ottoman is available in four colorways and the rug is actually 100% wool, hand-knotted in India. The size is 42″x20″x12″. If you need a large ottoman consider pairing two of the same ottomans together like you would when you pair benching coffee tables.

August DIY Project: How to glitter a door…

Posted on Aug 16, 2015 in Blog

Tell me who doesn’t love glittery doors? They are so much fun and add a little something extra in a whimsical setting. The door featured above is in the McNabb & Risley showroom and we have had so many “how to” requests I thought I’d share the process with you. It’s easier than you think to achieve this paint finish and it’s fun to do!

IMG_6071

The first step is to select a color for your door that you love. I recommend a mid-to-dark tone to create a contrast with the reflective glitter. I chose an all surface enamel paint in a high gloss finish. Paint your door and allow plenty of time for it to dry completely. My door took two days to dry!

To achieve the glittery ombré effect I simply chose a craft gloss with gold glitter. I applied the glitter gloss in thin layers using a 2″ wide soft brush. It’s important to work quickly because the product dries fast! Be sure to allow the glitter to dry before you layer on the next glaze. I love the finished effect and the way the glitter reflects the light in this space.

If you are not bold enough to try an entire door do the inside of a medicine cabinet or a desk drawer. Glitter gloss is available in a rainbow of colors and metallic finishes. You can purchase this product at any craft store and I used the Martha Stewart brand. Have fun experimenting with glitter, the end result will be stunning!

What I am designing today…

Posted on Aug 15, 2015 in Blog

Today I am in the McNabb & Risley design library creating custom window treatments for one of my clients. This client has a beautiful hand-knotted Persian carpet which was a gift from a family member and it is the focal point of her living room. The rug has a classic color palette of a deep rich maroon, navy blue, and touches of ivory.

img_15th

I proposed several textiles and we chose the embroidered fabric with metallic accents. The medallion mimics the pattern in the center of the rug and the rich burgundy tread matches the rug perfectly.

Tara’s Take on Design:
Embroidered cottons and silks are one of the top trends in window treatments for 2015. Many of these textiles are embellished with metallic accents that will take your simplest window treatment to the next level. I find the embroidered fabrics classic and the styles we offer transcend all design categories from contemporary to transitional.

Finishing touches featuring Katie, mother of the groom…

Posted on Aug 13, 2015 in Blog

Picture this: a late summer wedding, a gorgeous red-headed Mother of the Groom and a beautiful teal lace dress—what’s missing? The jewelry, or as we like to call it, the finishing touches.

Katie drove an hour and a half to go shop McNabb & Risley’s jewelry counter and found gorgeous vintage earrings and a circa 1950’s jeweled bracelet.

It was so much fun assisting Katie with her purchase. She will be an elegant Mother of the Groom.

Congratulations to Katie and her family!

What’s trending now? Globetrotting Bohemian style!

Posted on Aug 7, 2015 in Blog

It’s time to channel your inner bohemian spirit with inspiring style gathered from around the world. Discover our latest home collections that feature an international flare.

I love this free-spirited approach to interior design because it allows clients to think outside a certain design category, style, or period. This trend features bright color palettes, bold patterns of tribal influence, and an eclectic mix of furniture styles from antique to modern. This trend also appeals to collectors, artists, and anyone who loves color.

Bohemian style is often Moroccan inspired featuring deep seated sofa, opulent textiles and heavily patterned area rugs that are often layered on top of each other. This trend represents a laid back casual approach to design which is highly personalized by the individual. I think the beauty of this design concept is there is no correct way to create this mix. It’s all about the client and what they love!
