Design 101 — What exactly is a Glen Plaid?

Posted on Jan 27, 2017 in Blog

Glen Plaid (short for Glen Urquhart Plaid) is a woven textile twill fabric featuring large and small checks.  It is usually found in black, gray, and ivory or available in a muted brown color palette.  In the 1880's it was worn by games keepers of stately homes in Scotland.  Later, Glen Plaid was popularized by the Duke of Windsor in the 1940's and was nicknamed the Prince of Wales Check.  Today, interior designers utilize Glen Plaids in home décor when we want to create a masculine menswear interior.  I am spotting this popular pattern in wall coverings, textiles, area rugs, and bedding.  So, if you love understated elegance and a preppy look with an eye to the past, try decorating with Glen Plaid!
