The first step to creating a home you will love forever is to edit what you already own and declutter your space. This is the hardest part of the design process for most of us. It's important to take stock of your home furnishings and decide what you want to keep, refurbish, donate, or dispose of. Be ruthless, and do not keep anything you do not absolutely love, or that does not represent your style or how you choose to live. I recommend taking several days working through this process and working on one room at a time. Work in three hour increments so you do not get overwhelmed. Once your space is edited, now is the time to make a list of what you will be needing to purchase or refurbish. My best and final tip is to start with new furnishings or art you love because all furniture design choices will flow from this point.
