A Modern Heirloom- A French Bibliothéque, a book lover’s dream!

Posted on Apr 23, 2017 in Blog

This bookcase is not only a Modern Heirloom, it is a modern masterpiece.  Whether you place it in a dining room, living room, or library, this extraordinary French antique reproduction will add a touch of sophistication to any setting.  Just imagine displaying your prized books and art objects within this cabinet, sheer joy!  There are four French wired doors with pewter cross braces completed with a brass center medallion.  The finish is a hand rubbed antique black paint and best of all the cabinet has an ivory milk paint interior.  Love that!

If you love books as much as I do, you deserve something beautiful to display your collection.  This bibliothéque is very versatile even though most would believe it to be too formal for today's lifestyles.  Envision the cabinet in a loft with brick walls, distressed floors, and an open concept floor plan.  Add a pair of 120 inch long slipcover sofas, a huge cocktail ottoman in leather, and a pair of comfortable chairs- see how it could work?!  Special order and save during McNabb & Risley's Spring Sale!  Important- remember to measure your space because this piece is 87 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 94 inches high.

I have a question for you, is it considered hoarding when it's books?  Hmmmm- when I begin to think I own too many books, I remember my Great Aunt always said, "Never underestimate a well read woman."  So true!

Make every day Earth Day!

Posted on Apr 22, 2017 in Blog

Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues that affect our planet. Here are ten simple projects you can undertake this year to help make the world a cleaner place.

-Walk or ride your bike to work.
-Purchase reusable grocery bags.
-Compost all food waste.
-Conduct a trash pickup at a local park, school, or in your neighborhood.
-Plant a tree.
-Run full loads of laundry.
-Use phosphate-free detergent.
-Use energy saving light bulbs.
-Utilize natural pesticides.
-Make a commitment to go green in at least five areas of your life for the next year.

The small steps we take today will make a huge difference in the environment tomorrow. Yours, Tara Wilke

When this table arrived in the store I was so excited.  Typically, round tables become oval when leaves are inserted; and finding one with self –storing leaves is rare.  Imagine my delight to find that this 54” round table extended to a 70” round AND had self-storing leaves.

The mechanism on this table is amazing!  You expand the table by sliding the pie shaped leaves outward and bring the hidden leaves forward; it all fits together like a giant puzzle. There are no heavy leaves to store and haul out and the whole process takes about a minute.  I thought it was so ingenious and modern!  Imagine my surprise when I learned the mechanics of this round expanding table was created in the Victorian Era C.1835.

I enjoy showing this beautiful table more than any other piece of furniture in the store because of the delight and wonder it elicits from customers.  I invite you to come in and see for yourself why this quality, unique, table would be perfect for the casual lifestyles of today and become a family heirloom!

When I think of Modern Heirlooms, blue and white porcelain came to mind.  In design, blue and white color palettes are timeless.  Accent pieces like oriental jars, Japanese blue and white plates, and ginger jar lamps add an historic touch to any design aesthetic.

Blue and white color schemes can span from traditional, coastal, country, and even modern.  Today, I shared a few photos of a classic interior where I used blue and white and a close up of custom furniture and an area rug I created for a client's home!

A pair of slipcover sofas and this blue and white chair are heading North to a lake house.  I hope you enjoyed the sneak peek of some of my blue and white design projects, they are fresh, classic, and inviting!     -Krystle N.

I recently sold this pair of exquisite glass sculptures to one of my clients.  The sculptures are hand crafted of Murano glass and are infused with metallic copper accents that reflect the light at different angles.  I feel these sculptures are Modern Heirlooms because Murano glass has been in the collector category for over two centuries.  These artistic sculptures have been reimagined with a modern edge, it is decorative glass art at its best!

I am traditionalist at heart.  My selections for the Designer Spotlight page reflect my love for classic home furnishings that have timeless appeal.  The hand carved accent chair is small scale and will fit in any room in the home.  The brass round glass top table has an Asian influence which is always in good taste and I could see it placed on the exquisite oriental rug.  The hand crafted area rug is one of many we offer at McNabb & Risley through our Interior Design Service.  The color palette is from Benjamin Moore's curated historical paint collection and are accurate color pigments from America's past!

Modern Heirlooms- Classic Mid-Century style.

Posted on Apr 11, 2017 in Blog

If I had to select one superb Mid-Century classic that would endure the test of time, it would be this chic cabinet.  This piece is a classic in its simplistic design and the use of rare woods makes it extraordinary.  The cabinet features a beautiful book matched Olive Ash Burl veneer that covers the case on all four sides including the top.  Only the most perfect highly figured sections of wood are chosen by the expert craftsmen who then apply the veneers to a solid wood cabinet.  This process can only be done by hand, just as it was done two centuries ago.  The completed cabinet is placed on a hand cast cubist brass base that was polished and finished by the same craftsmen to ensure enduring quality and beauty.  I would love to see this cabinet placed prominently in an entry, den, or dining room.  There is an interior shelf and the outside measurements are width- 36" depth- 19" height- 35."  This piece is available in the natural finish with no other finish options.  Custom order this cabinet and save during the Spring Home Sale!

Passover begins at sundown tonight!

Posted on Apr 10, 2017 in Blog

Passover will start on Monday, April 10th and will continue for seven days until Tuesday, April 18th.  Passover is one of the most important Jewish religious holidays.  The Jewish people celebrate Passover as a commemoration of their liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and their freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses.

Modern Heirlooms- Chinoiserie is always a chic choice!

Posted on Apr 9, 2017 in Blog

This month I am exploring Modern Heirlooms, fine furniture being hand crafted today, that future generations will collect tomorrow.  Today's choice is a delicately scaled display cabinet (or bar) with stunning hand painted Chinoiserie.  If you are not familiar with Chinoiserie, it is a French term that refers to a European style design motif influenced by Chinese art.  This style was popular with the English aristocracy from the 16th through the 19th century and remains a tasteful choice for today's home.  The Chippendale style cabinet is constructed of solid mahogany and Imbuya burl veneers and features a pierced brass gallery.  Just think of the treasures you can display on this extraordinary piece of furniture!  Custom order today and save during the Spring Home Sale, your great grandchildren will thank you!

Are you a star gazer? Then you will love today’s Modern Heirloom selection!

Posted on Apr 7, 2017 in Blog

This amazing starburst table was inspired by a 17th century Spanish original.  We offer it in an inky black finish with silver leaf accents, however it is available in twenty-five specialty finishes.  The unique molded starburst top is stunning and I believe it is an excellent example of a Modern Heirloom that will be cherished for years to come.  I would love to use this table in a contemporary setting paired with sleek modern chairs, or you could use it in a traditional home flanked with classical wing chairs.  Custom order in the finish of your choice and save during the Spring Home Sale!

Craving colorful Spring inspiration? Interior Designer Sara Ryan shares…

Posted on Apr 6, 2017 in Blog

I love how Sara created this beautiful Spring centerpiece in one of her client's homes.  These handsome hand blown bottles were featured in last month's blog and now reside in an historic home in Downtown Milwaukee.  The layering of the glass bottles and the collection of topiary trees are fresh accents for Spring!

You may have seen this photo on our Instagram, but I thought I would share it on the blog too!  Simplify your accessories with one or two special accents.  Sara's client had the antique window and desired some color on the mantel.  Sara added this unique rustic bottle collection that has an adjustable bronze base.  The client purchased fresh daffodils to celebrate a special event she was hosting.  Simple, but oh so chic!  Thank you once again Sara for giving us a sneak peak at some of your design projects!

A life well lived – a loving tribute to the founder of McNabb and Risley – Richard McNabb

Posted on Mar 21, 2017 in Blog

Recently, Richard McNabb passed away at age 91 in Dallas, Texas where he had resided with family.  Mr. McNabb was the co-founder of McNabb & Risley Fine Furniture and Interior Design in Thiensville, Wisconsin, along with his dear friend Russell Risley.  When Mr. Risley passed away in the mid 1960's, Mr. McNabb, being the gentleman he was, insisted his business partner's name remain on the door.  He felt it was important because it was a dream they had shared, and he wanted the Risley family to know that the legacy would live on.  This is just a tiny example of Mr. McNabb's kindness and generous spirit.  Richard McNabb was a long time resident of Meqoun-Thiensville and raised his family locally.  He loved the small town rural feel of the community in the early 1960's and supported the Mequon-Thiensville Rotary Club for many years.  Mr. McNabb served as the Rotary Club President from 1969-1970 and was awarded the Honorary Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1994, which my husband and I proudly witnessed.

As the current owners of McNabb & Risley, my husband and I are deeply saddened by Dick's passing and will always remember him with deep respect and gratitude.  It was Richard McNabb who laid the successful foundation of the business that still bears his name today.  When we first purchased the store, Mr. McNabb was always there to be a sounding board to offer gentle guidance and insightful solutions for problems big and small.  He also knew everything about the store inside and out.  For instance, when I called him one morning and had to ask, "Do we have a well, and where is it?" when the well inspector suddenly appeared, Mr. McNabb came right over and showed where the well was in an obscure part of the warehouse where I would have never thought to look.  Also, Mr. McNabb was amazingly handy and could fix almost anything in the store that broke and if he couldn't, he knew who to call and would offer to do so.

Mr. McNabb continued to follow the furniture business for many years and would stop by to talk shop right up to the time he moved to Texas.  His enthusiasm at age 90 was inspiring!  I hope when he looks down from Heaven that he sees how his little company has grown and expanded and realizes all the opportunities that he has played forward to Jim and I and all the McNabb & Risley employees over the last six decades.  Because of Mr. McNabb's vision, six generations of employees have been able to actualize their dreams big and small in more ways than he can imagine!  Many of us were able to buy homes, drive safe cars, send children to college, pay for weddings, afford costly medical care, pay off school debt, support elderly parents, and contribute to local charities.  I like to think of this as the ripple effect where one life can make a huge difference to so many.  For this and more, I thank you Mr. McNabb, you will never be forgotten and you left the world a better place just by being in it.

-Jim and Tara Wilke and the entire McNabb & Risley Staff
