I have She-Shed envy today! I recently assisted a customer as she decorated a luxurious She-Shed in her backyard. The new space is air conditioned and can be heated by a wood burning stove in the Winter. This is a personal space for my client and friends to relax, and she wanted it to be comfortable and represent her taste and unique style. We chose a down filled daybed that was customized in a beautiful Caribbean blue fabric that complemented the hand painted ocean blue floors. We also added a sumptuous swivel glider lounge chair that is great for reading and relaxation! This was such a fun project and I feel we created the perfect retreat for a warm Summer day or a cozy hideaway for a cold Winter night. -Susan V.
*If you are not familiar with what a She-Shed is, this will bring you up to date! First there were Man-Caves, then came equal rights for women and the She-Shed design trend was born. The She-Shed is a backyard haven for busy women seeking peace and calm from the world, husbands, crying children, unruly pets, and the list goes on... Many women today are choosing to transform backyard sheds, outbuildings, or even build small one room structures as hide-aways where they can get away from it all and pamper themselves.
Working full time creating personalized environments for my clients did not prepare me for my biggest challenge, redesigning my own space! Recently, I purchased a contemporary modular sectional, I was immediately drawn to the comfort and the relaxed style. My next challenge was to design a space that I would want to live with for many years. This was not an easy challenge considering the past forty years I have spent buying, collecting, and inheriting so many things that have become part of my everyday life.
For so long I wanted to "clean it up" so the speak. Once I settled on the versatile modular sectional, I felt compelled to make the change. My first step was to measure my room, then arrange the sectional so it made the best of my available space. I added a large square ottoman which gave me extra seating and the flexibility to move it around. The ottoman can be arranged as an extension of the sectional creating a chaise effect. I also have four dogs and like most people our four legged kids need to be taken in account too!
Once my sectional shape and size was determined, I began formulating my new look. I wanted to keep my sectional fairly neutral so that I could add art as my source of color. I have many pieces of fine art that I have collected over the years and decided to add one new piece to be placed over the sectional. My existing art will be used as support pieces. My new large canvas from McNabb & Risley blends my existing collection into my new design direction. To finish blending the old with the new, I built display cubicles into the wall that go floor to ceiling and added custom drapery. Not only will this be a great home for media, it allows me to showcase pottery and sculptures that I have collected over the years in a clean contemporary setting. That allows me to highlight my most treasured pieces so I can enjoy them every day! -Michael D.
The first step to creating a home you will love forever is to edit what you already own and declutter your space. This is the hardest part of the design process for most of us. It's important to take stock of your home furnishings and decide what you want to keep, refurbish, donate, or dispose of. Be ruthless, and do not keep anything you do not absolutely love, or that does not represent your style or how you choose to live. I recommend taking several days working through this process and working on one room at a time. Work in three hour increments so you do not get overwhelmed. Once your space is edited, now is the time to make a list of what you will be needing to purchase or refurbish. My best and final tip is to start with new furnishings or art you love because all furniture design choices will flow from this point. Nothing is more satisfying than a beautifully decorated home that reflects your personality and your lifestyle. Happy decorating everyone! -Tara

Creating a home you love is a life long process that takes time, thought, and planning. The secret to successful design is focusing on what makes you happy at home and brings joy to your everyday existence. Begin by focusing on how you want to live in your home. What may have worked for you in your 20's and 30's may no longer apply, or represent your current needs and desires. Just as you grow and change, your design vision and preferences will too. Creating an interior that reflects your interests, style, and taste has never been easier. Personalized design is a huge trend in the design world. I believe that good design is based on quality, innovative style, and of course the ultimate luxury is comfort. I invite you to stop in and visit McNabb & Risley during the Anniversary Sale and see all of our exciting home collections!

This month I am highlighting the top color trend for 2018, the color blue. Take the guess work out of any design project with these stunning paint colors I have used in my clients' homes.
I love the classical design color combination in this traditional master bedroom. The wall color was inspired by the deep blue velvet accent pillows and I chose Benjamin Moore HC154 Hale Navy for the walls.
My client wanted a rich deep blue for their kitchen walls to complement their warm russet cabinetry. Their home has an open floor plan with a watercolor palette and gray neutrals. The blue we focused on was featured predominantly in their oriental rug and a stunning abstract art painting. We selected SW7607 Santorini Blue from Sherwin Williams for their walls and backsplash. The design world has been swooning over this color for several years and I think it was the perfect pick for my clients' space!
I consulted on this gorgeous powder room in a historical Tudor home in Mequon and the color inspiration was drawn from a antique oriental rug in the next room. My client loves depth of color and was excited to see how this paint transformed her powder room into a showplace. We finally decided on a Sherwin William paint, SW6516 Downpour, and I am so pleased with the finished result!
It has been said that the ceiling is the fifth wall in any interior, and I love to call out a tray ceiling with a soft pastel color. The inspiration for this color palette came from the upholstery in an accent chair in my clients' sunroom. We selected SW6218 Tradewind, a soft pale blue that defines the tray ceiling and highlights the fan.
Feeling a little blue after the holiday season? So are we, in the best way possible! Score these fabulous tear drop earrings and pair them with your favorite frock for a night out on the town. Best of all, this fashion update won't break the bank and you will feel like a million bucks! 2018 is looking very bright indeed...
Every room needs a great spot table, and this one is design perfection! Spot tables are often referred to as accent tables, they are generally small scale accents that are easily moved and a great spot to put a drink chairside. Many of these pieces are unique and meant to be the "jewelry" or finishing touch in a beautifully designed interior. This particular table features a hand painted lapis table top and an aged nickel finish on the base. We are able to customize the tabletop in a variety of different colors and stains including decorative finishes like the one featured above. Custom order and save during McNabb & Risley's Winter Sale!

Our featured area rug is not only beautiful in a classical sense, it is extremely hard wearing for active families and affordable too! The carpet is 75% polyester and 25% cotton which gives the rug a soft hand and depth of color I absolutely love. This area rug is a handwoven flat weave, much like an antique, and is available in many sizes. Custom order today and save during the Winter Sale!
The interior featured above is a study in a bold color palette that a design traditionalist will love!
Blue and ivory accents enhance the stunning oriental carpet in this beautiful traditional dining room setting. This is an updated traditional design at its best, simply stunning!
Love a blue and white color scheme? This living room was inspired room by the family's ivory and cobalt blue oriental rug. The off white sofa with sapphire blue accent pillows make this a dramatic focal point in this interior.
A pair of cobalt blue settees and a stunning oriental rug create a lovely sitting area to relax and enjoy and great book!

It's no secret in the design community that great lighting is a worthwhile investment. A beautifully designed lamp will stand the test of time and will provide style and function for years to come. Our elegant lamp offers a dramatic shape which is repeated in a square linen shade. The cobalt blue pattern is hand painted over crisp white ceramic and rests on an acrylic base. This stunning lamp will update any interior and will complement a wide range of styles from modern to transitional!
It's a McNabb & Risley tradition to celebrate the holidays and the successes of the past year after New Year's Day. I believe it is always fun to have one more thing to look forward to in January when our staff has more time to relax. Our entire staff and their families were treated to a fabulous brunch at Bartolotta's Lake Park Bistro to thank them for another great year!

A fabulous area rug can inspire an entire design scheme or complete one. McNabb & Risley Interior Designer Gretchen recently assisted her client with finding the perfect area rug for her lovely dining room. The blue and ivory pattern complements the window treatments and creates a nice contrast to the rich dark hardwood floors. Many thanks to Gretchen's client for sharing her beautiful home with our readers!

This month I am exploring the hottest color palette for 2018, the emergence of the color blue. Blue was the dominating color story at the High Point Furniture Market last Fall and I'm calling it out as a trend that is here to stay! From the deepest midnight blue to the midrange of denim blue, this color palette is classic and modern at once. It has been said that blue is the World's favorite color and I couldn't agree more. I cannot get enough of this gorgeous color and here are my favorite picks featuring sublime blue interiors that are definitely swoon worthy!
This month I have a major design crush on the color blue! This exuberant abstract painting in cobalt blue and crisp white is on trend for 2018. Find it now at McNabb & Risley and save during the Winter Sale.
