Looks like winter’s here to stay!

Featured Artist: Lynne Alexander

Posted on Jan 29, 2014 in Blog

Art collectors take note! Here’s the latest from an extraordinary artist, Lynne Alexander! I discovered Lynne’s art    in a chic little coffee shop in Queen Anne, a historic district just north of downtown Seattle, WA. Lynne has been involved in the arts for most of her life and for the last ten years she has devoted her creative energy to painting. What I love about this accomplished artist is that she is self-taught and brings a fresh perspective to the art world.

For more information, please visit Lynne’s website at www.alexanderartworks.net. Thank you Lynne for sharing!

Not ready to commit to an all white interior? Try my simple tips on how to introduce the color white into your home. Enjoy!

Posted on Jan 26, 2014 in Blog

I love beadboard and have used it on walls in the sunroom, a bathroom and on a ceiling in a cottage. It is also an inexpensive alternative to a tile backsplash. You can paint beadboard any color, but I adore it in white. Beadboard is timeless and classic and it will not break the design budget.

Another simple way to introduce white into the home is to use sheer white drapery panels. The lightweight fabric allows light to shine through while still affording some privacy.

Create a spa-like feeling in your bathroom by switching all of your colorful towels to elegant, plush, all-white towels. The towels featured above are 100% cotton, have a 600 gram weight and are strong and luxuriously absorbent. The subtle peacock pattern reverses to terrycloth and are available in white or ivory.

Subway tile has been used since the early 1900’s and was named after the New York Subway System in 1904. This classic tile is approximately a 3×6 rectangular shape but is available in a lot of different sizes. I like the design flexibility that Subway Tile offers; it can look great in a modern setting or if you have a traditional setting, try a hand-molded tile with a pillow edge and a crackle finish.

Hannah’s favorite white is White Chocolate Natura by Benjamin Moore. It’s an eco-friendly and sustainable option that has no harmful VOC’s. This warm white is very light and refreshing and really opens up a space.

Jessica’s favorite white is Simply White by Benjamin Moore. She’s used this in her own home and did the entire kitchen in Simply White. This white is a compatible choice for any color palette and goes well with cool or warm tones.

 Simply White

John’s favorite white is Navajo White by Benjamin Moore. It’s a warm white but looks crisp with cool colors too. He’s used Navajo White in his Master Bath and absolutely loves the results!

Kristen’s favorite white is West Highland White by Sherwin Williams. This white has warmth but works really well with gray hues. It would be amazing in a Powder Room using different paint sheens in a stripe application!

Tara’s favorite white is Moderate White by Sherwin Williams. This white has a very deep saturation; she recently repainted all her woodwork in Moderate White and loves the warmth of the color.

 Moderate White

Linda’s favorite white is Ivory Lace from Sherwin Williams. It has a soft, creamy white feel but without the yellow undertones that some of the other basic whites that are readily used have. Ivory Lace has a crisp quality that would make it ideal for moldings and doors in conjunction with a wide variety of other colors.

Design Terminology 101: What is Mother of pearl?

Posted on Jan 21, 2014 in Blog

Our mosaic tray with organic shaped handles is an excellent example of how Mother of pearl has been used throughout the ages for decorative purposes. Mother of pearl, also known as Nacre (Nay-ker), is the inner shell in the majority of mollusks and it is also what makes up the lustrous outer coating of pearls. Mother of pearl is strong, resilient and beautifully iridescent.

January’s birthstone, the garnet, symbolizes a light heart, loyalty and enduring affections

Posted on Jan 17, 2014 in Blog

Such a sweet sentiment, I just love the deep, rich red color of a good garnet. Our faux Victorian garnet ring features lovely faceted stones. Foil backed gems are set in a bronze metal ring, which is adjustable. This piece is probably Czechoslovakian, circa 1890.

As with all antique jewelry, there is only one!

January’s Art Selection: “Freedom”

Posted on Jan 10, 2014 in Blog

Our magnificent painting demonstrates how extraordinary the use of range of value and contrast can be. You can actually feel the joyous energy of the galloping horses when you stand in front of the richly painted oil painting.

Here is an excellent example of an art selection for an all white interior. The painting’s execution and drama are superb – and done entirely without color. Simply brilliant!

“The effect of an all white dining room can be magical.” –Tara Wilke

Posted on Jan 7, 2014 in Blog

The beauty of an all white on white dining room is simply the absence of color. I love bold color; however, color can be distracting in the dining room, taking focus away from the food, its presentation and your tablescape.

Imagine yourself sitting down to dine in this beautiful light, bright and airy dining room. Now imagine you are surrounded by friends about to enjoy a meal you lovingly prepared. There is nothing in this room’s décor to distract you from the pleasure of dining, good conversation and the joy of sharing a meal with those you love. Everything that is important comes into a sharp focus: the flowers, the food, soft candlelight, and most important, your guests. The dining experience has been taken to a new level because you chose an all white on white décor. Bon appetite!

Have you ever dreamed of a white color scheme?

Posted on Jan 6, 2014 in Blog

This month’s blog is dedicated to all of you who swoon over white décor in the chic shelter magazines, myself included! Getting white right can be tricky but if you follow my simple design tips, I promise you a fail-safe interior that you will love forever. All products featured are at McNabb & Risley now or can be ordered for you, so let’s get started!

When considering an all white color scheme, be sure to check your room’s sunlight exposure; white tends to look best in sun drenched rooms and particularly lovely if you have a southern exposure. A northern exposure tends to offer cooler light, so if you proceed with a white scheme in these rooms, opt for cool whites or white with a touch of gray.

White color schemes are all about an absence of color so they are very calming and peaceful. When you remove color from a design scheme, what remains are the “bare bones”: your architecture, the furniture and finally the art selections. Since the furniture and art are now the primary design focus, it is extremely important to make correct selections early in the design process.

Choose interesting furniture silhouettes that are finely crafted and feature unique design details. Combine rich textures and woven fabrics in various shades of white for your upholstery, being careful not to match the whites too perfectly. White can be cool or warm, now is the time to choose one palette and do not deviate from the scheme. This simple tip will lead to the success of your final design so I encourage you not to mix cool whites             with warm whites.  I personally like to start with the darkest white on the floor, whether it be a painted wood floor or an area rug, then move up in the color scale ever so slightly for the upholstery and saving the brightest whites for the walls and window treatments.

White rooms are perfect for introducing unexpected design elements like a mirrored chest, a statement cocktail table or a fabulous modern painting.

Your interior is like a blank canvas, waiting for you, the artist, to begin your design journey. It has been said that white symbolizes fresh beginnings; with that in mind, what do you want to create for 2014? I hope to inspire you all month with my top selections of Winter Whites!

Fond Regards,
Tara Wilke
